U.S. Congressman Trey Gowdy (SC-4) will headline the United States Marshals Museum’s second Winthrop Paul Rockefeller Distinguished Lecture Series in Fort Smith on Thursday, April 20. The three-part series, made possible by a grant from Mrs. Lisenne Rockefeller in 2014, welcomes leaders from the executive, judicial and legislative branches of the government to Fort Smith to speak about the U.S. Marshals Service’s history within each branch. The inaugural lecture in 2015 featured the late Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Antonin Scalia.
Congressman Gowdy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010. Now in his fourth term, he serves on the House Committees on Intelligence; Ethics; Oversight and Government Reform; and Judiciary, where he also serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations. He is the former Chairman of the Select Committee on the Event Surrounding the 2012 Terrorist Attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Prior to his election, Congressman Gowdy served as the elected 7th Circuit Solicitor, the District Attorney for the state of South Carolina’s 7th Judicial Circuit for 10 years. He also served as a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina for six years and as a law clerk for John P. Gardner on the South Carolina Court of Appeals and U.S. District Court Judge George Ross Anderson, Jr. He earned his B.A. in history from Baylor University and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He currently lives in Spartanburg, South Carolina with his wife, Terri Dillard Gowdy. They have two children, Watson and Abigail.
The public lecture will be held at the Fort Smith Convention Center in Exhibit Hall B on Thursday, April 20 at 1 p.m. It will include an introduction by U.S. Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3).
